Dear Novi Community School District Families,
The physical and emotional safety of our students and staff is our top priority.
We understand the fear and anxiety that some students, families and staff may be feeling due to recent events.
After careful and deliberate consideration by the NCSD administrative council, Board of Education, the Novi Police Department and representatives of the Novi Educational Association, it was determined that school will remain closed on Monday, December 6, 2021. We recognize the impact this may have on families and we thank you for your patience and support.
The District will use that time to review and practice safety protocols that have been in place for years.
This will include continuing our work in ALICE training that has been in place since 2016, facilitated by the Novi Police Department, before students return to school on Tuesday, December 7, 2021. There were 1036 staff members who have been trained in ALICE and 10 District administrators that are certified trainers of trainers.
With the support of our School Resource Officers, a District security team will continue the work they began Thursday inspecting all buildings.
NCSD will also continue the work with our staff on Monday, helping them prepare to attend to the social-emotional needs of our students. Additional resources will be provided on how you can talk with your children about these difficult circumstances.
While local law enforcement agencies, in conjunction with the FBI, are investigating threats to schools across Oakland County, our School Resource Officers -- Det. Jon Zabick and Det. Julie Warren -- have assured us that there are no credible threats to the District. We value the great relationships the District has with our city’s public safety team and thank them for their service to our community.
Please have conversations with your children about the seriousness of making or re-distributing threats. NCSD takes all threats seriously. Making threats is a crime.
It is important for students, parents and staff to report any threats on social media platforms or text messages by using the confidential reporting tool OK2Say or contacting the Novi Police Department.
We encourage you to take time to listen to your children and their needs, as these are challenging times. We are grateful for your support and partnership and are committed to providing a safe and positive learning environment for all students.
