Graduation Requirements

A total of 22 credits are required for graduation from Novi High School. Students must complete the specified number of credits in each subject area, including one class from each bulleted row. These requirements apply to the Classes of 2015-2027.

4 English Credits

  • Ninth Grade English
  • Tenth Grade English
  • Eleventh Grade English, AP English Language & Composition, AP English Literature & Composition, or IB Literature HL1
  • Twelfth Grade English, Wildcat Writing Den, AP English Language & Composition, AP English Literature & Composition, or IB Literature HL2

4 Math Credits

  • Algebra 1
  • Geometry or Honors Geometry
  • Algebra 2, Honors Algebra 2, Algebra 2A and 2B
  • Additional math or math-related course in final year of high school

3 Social Studies Credits

  • US History, AP US History or IB World HL2: History of The Americas
  • Civics or AP US Government & Politics
  • Economics or AP Microeconomics AND AP Macroeconomics
  • World History, AP European History, or IB World History SL/HL1

3 Science Credits

  • Biology or AP/IB Biology
  • Chemistry or AP Chemistry
  • Physics, AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism, AP Physics C: Mechanics, or IB Physics

1 Credit of Health and PE

  • Fundamentals of PE or Power Yoga
  • Health

(The completion of IB Sports, Exercise & Health Science SL will fulfill the Health graduation requirement; PE Waiver forms may be requested from your counselor)

1 Visual, Performing, Applied Arts (VPA) Credit

  • Two .5 credit Visual, Performing, or Applied Arts (VPA) classes

2 World Language Credits

  • Two (2.0) full credits of the same world language

(Completion of formal CTE program or 1 additional VPA credit may substitute the 2nd year of world language)

4 Additional Credits

Students take additional coursework to fulfill the additional four credits requirement. Any course or credit that is not fulfilling one of the above listed graduation requirements will fall into this category.

Graduation Requirements for Class of 2028+

In addition to the specific requirements listed above, students in the Class of 2028 and later must also earn .5 credit Personal Finance. 
Students enrolling in Economics will cover the Personal Finance content and have an opportunity to show proficiency to be awarded .5 Personal Finance credit (RC).
Students taking both AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics will meet both their Economics and Personal Finance graduation requirements.

If a student has earned their Economics credit, but has not received the Personal Finance .5 credit (such as in the case of a transfer to the district) the following courses may be taken and will qualify for the .5 Personal Finance graduation requirement:

  • Finance 1: Building Wealth
  • Life & Leadership

Students may also request to Test Out of Personal Finance beginning in 2025.

Students may exchange .5 credit of the Additional Math or Math related course (also referred to as senior math or 4th math credit), .5 credit of VPA or .5 credit of World Language for the .5 Personal Finance credit, still requiring a total of 22 credits to graduate.
Students completing Algebra 2 during their senior year, may exchange the .5 credit of Personal Finance for .5 credit of VPA or .5 credit of World Language.
