Novi Robotics

FIRST (www.firstinspires.com) inspires young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting Mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. Teams are coached by parent volunteers. No experience necessary! Novi Robotics provides rookie and veteran team training and support. Students that have a parent coach or host a team are guaranteed a place on a team. All team member parents are expected to attend meetings and mentor the team. Roles include but are not limited to Robot Build, Programming, Team Administration, Project Research/Presentation, Engineering Notebook, Finance/Budget, Outreach/Sponsorships and Marketing.

Registration for the Fall

Registration for the 2026, FLLE/FLLC and FTC season will open on Wednesday, April 1st and close on Friday, May 22nd via GoFan.

Robotics Levels

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE EXPLORE (Grades K-3)

FIRST LEGO League Explore captures young student’s inherent curiosity and directs it toward discovering the wonders of science and technology. This program features a real-world scientific concept to be explored through research, teamwork, construction, and imagination. Guided by parent coaches, teams use LEGO bricks to build a model that moves and develop a team poster to illustrate their journey. Teams will culminate their season by sharing what they’ve learned at an Explore Festival. Teams are coached by parents and meet 1-2 times a week in member homes. Teams will be no larger than 6 students and will be grouped by their school.

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE CHALLENGE (Grades 4-6)

FIRST LEGO League Challenge students are immersed in real-world science and technology challenges. Teams design their own solution to a current scientific question or problem and build autonomous LEGO robots that perform a series of missions. Through their participation, children develop valuable life skills and discover exciting career possibilities while learning that they can make a positive contribution to society. Teams attend one qualifying competition in Nov/Dec with the opportunity to advance to the state competition in December. Events may require parent & student travel outside SE Michigan. Additional costs may be incurred depending on grant and sponsorship funding. Teams are coached by parents and meet 2-3 times a week in member homes. Maximum of 10 students per team, 6 students ideal.

FIRST TECH CHALLENGE (Grades 7-8)

FIRST Tech Challenge is designed for students to compete head-to-head using a sports model. Teams design, build, and program their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built using a preapproved robotics kit and Android based controller programmed in JAVA. Teams develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Teams attend two qualifying competitions in Nov/Dec with the opportunity to advance to the state competition in December. Events may require parent & student travel outside SE Michigan. Additional fee’s may be incurred depending on grant and sponsorship funding. Teams are coached by parents and meet 2-3 times a week in member homes. Maximum of 15 students per team, 8-10 students ideal.

FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION (Grades 9-12)

FIRST Robotics Competition teams design, build and program robots to play a sophisticated 3on3 game of skill on a basketball court sized field. Novi High School has two FIRST Robotics teams, Frog Force (Team 503) and Automated Amphibians (Team 8426).

Each year, new members are invited to join the teams in June to participate in orientation and training, with membership requests closing by late July. The competition season kicks off with the game reveal the first Saturday in January. District qualifiers are held in March and April. Last season, both teams qualified for the State and World Championships in April.

The teams welcome students in all grades, in many roles including programming, CAD, build, electrical, finance, marketing, community outreach, photography, videography, design and artwork, and more.
