IB Career-related Program

What is the IB CP?

Students in the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Career-related Program (CP) engage with career related studies program that genuinely interests them, while gaining transferable and lifelong skills in applied knowledge, critical thinking, communication, and cross-cultural engagement.

In short, it is a program that allows student to develop

Career/technical skills (2 credits/4 semesters of career focused classes)
Academic skills (2 DP courses as part of Novi grad requirements)
Employability skills (explicitly taught in our CP Personal and Professional Skills course)

Novi High School currently offers the IB CP to students interested in business - Marketing or Finance, Engineering, or any of the pathways offered through OSTC.

The Three Parts of the Career-related Program

Career/Employability

Academic Skills

Requirement: Two diploma classes

Separate from Career Related Study (CRS) courses

Can be standard level (SL) or higher level (HL)*

Can fulfill graduation requirements

Examples

IB Language A Literature HL = 11th and 12th grade ELA requirement

IB World History SL = 11th grade world history requirement

IB History HL = world history and US History requirements

IB Biology HL = biology requirement

IB Physics SL = physics requirement

IB Sports, Exercise & Health Sciences = PE and health requirements

IB Math Analysis & Approaches SL = 2 years of math

*Depending on the college/university - HL courses may earn college credit and placement like AP classes, some even give credit for SL.

IB Subject Briefs - Provides general course descriptions of all courses offered by IB. Please note IB schools choose courses to fit their context, so not all courses are or can be offered.

Employability Skills

Completed within and supported by TWO Year CP Core Course

Personal and Professional Skills

Curriculum supports students development of attitudes, skills and strategies to be applied to personal and professional situations and contexts now and in the future - the majority of the curriculum of the CP core course.

Reflective Project

Independent research into an ethical dilemma within the identified career related study. Coordinated by Mrs. Bratney, and under the supervision of a mentor teacher. End product can be an essay, or an essay in combination with another type of presentation. CP core course class time provided to work on the project.

Language Portfolio

Students will create a portfolio to showcase their communication skills in another language in a way that supports their career related study. CP core course class time provided to work on the portfolio.

Service Learning

Requires students to develop and apply knowledge and skills towards meeting an identified and authentic community need. Students are to plan, act, and reflect on independent and group service learning projects. CP core course class time provided to work on the portfolio.

The IB Programs are open to all students, however, we ask students to complete an application to ensure they are up for the challenge and aware of the requirements.
